Using scientific, graphing, and financial calculators in mathematics teaching.
I am a member of the Maine GIS User Group.
I was a member of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. However, due to their policy of teaching dual measurement units — metric units and inch/pound units — I chose not to renew my membership in that organization. As I informed them, I believe that it is impractical, confusing to students, and self-defeating to teach two types of measurement system. In my considered opinion, only one measurement should be taught and used — the metric system, and in particular its modern form (SI, which stands for international system of units).
The metric system is a rational system of weights and measures, exclusively used in much of the world, and widely used throughout most of the rest. The United States stands as a glaring exception. I believe that, for the sake of educational and scientific progress, this country should adopt the metric system as its sole measurement system. To promote this goal, I am a member of the U.S. Metric Association. Furthermore, I have fulfilled the requirements to attain the status of Certified Metrication Specialist.
