Quantity: 1,000,000 stamps Designer: Vanessa Isitt (Canada), engraved by Sverre Morken (Norway), adapted as stamp by Robert Stein (United Nations, New York)

Specification: 24.13 mm horizontally by 36.57 mm vertically. Perforation: 13

Description: The stamp reproduces "Mourning Owl", by Vanessa Isitt (Canada). The stamp was engraved by Sverre Morken (Norway). The original "Mourning Owl" was done in 1985, shortly after Vanessa moved to Nicola Valley. The artist describes her painting by saying: "It represents the cultural heritage of myself and my husband, as well as the Native peoples which reside near us. The owl came from a recurring dream. My father is part Maori, and I grew up under the influence of his stories and culture; the owl is my 'guide', so to speak, or a totem, some would say. The female in the picture is symbolic of Mother Earth, as well as the Haida peoples, the Aztecs (her headdress), and she is looking to the future." The drawing took over 100 hours to complete.
